Exploring Madeira’s north coast offers not only breathtaking landscapes but also a rich culinary journey. Here are five notable restaurants that showcase the region’s authentic flavours:
1. Restaurante Lavrador
Located in São Vicente, Restaurante Lavrador is celebrated for its traditional Madeiran cuisine with a modern twist. Guests often praise the cozy ambiance and stunning valley views, making it an ideal spot for a memorable dining experience. I recommend trying the fish of the day.

2. Restaurante O Arco
Situated in the charming village of Arco de São Jorge, Restaurante O Arco offers a warm atmosphere and a menu featuring local specialties. You may be blessed with a gorgeous sunset depending on the time of year. It’s a favorite among both locals and visitors seeking authentic Madeiran dishes. I recommend goat from their menu.

3. Restaurante Cachalote
Overlooking the natural pools of Porto Moniz, Restaurante Cachalote provides a delightful dining experience with fresh seafood and traditional dishes. The combination of delicious food and scenic views makes it a must-visit. I recommend the caramujos as a starter (sea snails) and the grilled espada (black scabbard fish) for the main.
4. Restaurante Arco Íris
Nestled in Seixal, Restaurante Arco Íris is known for its friendly service and hearty meals. The menu features a variety of local dishes, offering a taste of Madeira’s culinary heritage in a relaxed setting. We and our neighbours go here often, as it’s the main social spot for locals in Seixal. You may also bump into Jackson Groves, the residing influencer who now lives nearby. Some evenings have live music. I recommend the espada ‘tempura’.
5. Restaurante Cambota
Catering primarily to local workers, Restaurante Cambota in São Vicente serves a ‘prato do dia’ (dish of the day) during lunch hours. One of their specialties is ‘mão-de-vaca’ (cow’s hoof), a traditional dish that’s labor-intensive and rarely found on restaurant menus or prepared at home. This makes Cambota a unique spot to experience authentic Madeiran flavors. Be prepared that they don’t speak any english, they have no menu and are generally not used to foreign customers. I recommend ‘mão-de-vaca’ served on Thursdays.
These establishments offer a genuine taste of Madeira’s north coast, each providing a unique dining experience that reflects the island’s rich culinary traditions.
