Where to stay on Madeira: Funchal, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Santana or Ponta do Sol?

One of the most common questions I see from people planning their first trip to Madeira is:

“Where should we stay?”

The truth is that there isn’t a single correct answer.

Madeira may look small on a map, but different parts of the island offer completely different experiences.

Some visitors want restaurants, nightlife and easy access to amenities.

Others dream of waking up to the sound of the ocean in a quiet village surrounded by nature.

Having lived on Madeira and spent years exploring every corner of the island, here’s my guide to choosing the right base for your trip.

Funchal: best for first-time visitors

For many people, Funchal is the easiest and most practical choice.

As the capital of Madeira, it offers the widest selection of hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and activities.

It’s also where most whale watching trips, catamaran cruises and guided excursions depart from.

Pros

  • Largest choice of accommodation
  • Excellent restaurants and nightlife
  • Easy airport access
  • Great for visitors without a rental car
  • Beautiful old town and marina

Cons

  • Can feel busy, especially when cruise ships arrive
  • Less traditional than some rural areas
  • Limited access to nature without transport

Best for

First-time visitors, couples, city lovers and those not planning to rent a car.

Porto Moniz: best for nature lovers

swimming in porto moniz

Famous for its volcanic natural swimming pools, Porto Moniz sits on Madeira’s dramatic north-west coast.

Many visitors come here for a day trip.

Far fewer stay overnight.

That’s a mistake.

Once the day visitors leave, Porto Moniz becomes one of the most peaceful and beautiful places on the island.

Pros

  • Stunning scenery
  • Natural swimming pools
  • Incredible sunsets
  • Beautiful sunrise opportunities
  • Great access to the Laurissilva Forest
  • Quieter evenings

Cons

  • Further from the airport
  • Limited nightlife
  • Weather can be more changeable than the south coast

Sunrise lovers

Many visitors associate Madeira sunrises with the island’s highest peaks, but some of my favourite sunrises happen along the north-west coast.

Early mornings in Porto Moniz can be incredibly peaceful, with dramatic cloud formations, ocean views and very few people around. The combination of rugged coastline, volcanic landscapes and soft morning light makes this one of Madeira’s most underrated sunrise locations.

Seixal: best for a peaceful escape

If your idea of a perfect holiday involves waterfalls, black sand beaches and village life, Seixal deserves serious consideration.

It’s one of the most picturesque locations on Madeira and, in my admittedly biased opinion as a resident, one of the island’s most special places.

Life moves slowly here.

That’s exactly why many people fall in love with it.

Pros

  • Beautiful black sand beach
  • Spectacular coastal scenery
  • Waterfalls and natural pools
  • Fantastic sunrise location
  • Authentic village atmosphere
  • Less crowded than major tourist areas
  • Excellent base for exploring the north coast

Cons

  • Fewer services than Funchal
  • A car is highly recommended
  • Limited nightlife
  • Parking can be challenging, especially during summer. Be prepared to park a few minutes away and walk to your accommodation.

Local recommendations

One of my favourite places in the village is Arco Iris. Traditionally known for lunch, they now also open for dinner during the summer season and the atmosphere in the evenings is fantastic. It’s one of the best places to experience local life, with residents gathering after work to eat, drink and catch up with friends.

For something sweet, make sure you visit Benzeiro. They produce some of the best ice cream on Madeira using seasonal local fruits, many of which visitors have never tried before. They also sell beautiful handmade souvenirs created by local artists, making it a far more unique place to pick up a gift than a typical airport souvenir shop.

Sunrise in Seixal

One of the things visitors often overlook about Seixal is how beautiful it is at sunrise.

While many people head for the mountains, Seixal offers a completely different experience. The first light often illuminates the cliffs, waterfalls and coastline while the village is still asleep.

Some mornings are dramatic and colourful.

Others are quiet, moody and atmospheric.

Both are unforgettable.

On particularly clear mornings, you can even see Porto Santo on the horizon.

If you’re staying in Seixal, I highly recommend setting an alarm at least once during your trip.

When people think of a Madeira sunrise, they usually imagine fiery skies, golden clouds and dramatic colours. This morning wasn’t one of those mornings. The sky was covered in cloud and the colours were subtle. Yet somehow it felt just as magical. One thing Madeira has taught me is that nature doesn’t always put on a spectacular show. Sometimes the beauty is found in the quieter moments—the movement of the clouds, the silence before the island wakes up, or spotting Porto Santo sitting on the horizon nearly 45km away. It’s easy to chase the “perfect” sunrise. But some of my favourite mornings have been the ones that looked disappointing on paper. Because being here was never really about the colours. It was about the experience. Can you spot Porto Santo in the distance? 🌿 Follow for more moments from the real Madeira. #madeira #sunrise #portosanto #madeiralife #visitmadeira

A pink sky, a quiet morning and a brand new week ahead. 🌅 This was the view from my house today. One of the things I love about Madeira is how often nature reminds us to slow down for a moment. Before the emails, the meetings, the school runs and the endless to-do lists, there’s a brief window where the world feels calm. A chance to pause. A chance to breathe. A chance to remember that every week starts with possibility. Wishing you a great week ahead from Madeira. 🌿 What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this week? 👇

Best for

Couples, nature lovers, photographers, sunrise lovers and travellers looking to experience a more authentic side of Madeira.

Santana: best for exploring the north-east

sao jorge

Most visitors know Santana for its traditional triangular houses.

However, the area offers much more than that.

The north-east coast contains some of Madeira’s most dramatic landscapes, beautiful viewpoints and quieter hiking routes.

Pros

  • Traditional Madeira character
  • Great hiking opportunities
  • Beautiful countryside
  • Less touristy atmosphere

Cons

  • Fewer accommodation options
  • Car recommended
  • Less convenient for evening dining

Best for

Hikers, explorers and visitors wanting to experience traditional Madeira.

Ponta do Sol: best for sunshine

staying in ponta do sol

Ponta do Sol literally means “Point of the Sun”.

It’s one of the sunniest places on the island and has become increasingly popular with remote workers and travellers looking for a relaxed atmosphere.

Pros

  • Sunny weather
  • Beautiful seafront
  • Excellent cafés and restaurants
  • Central location

Cons

  • Smaller accommodation selection
  • Can become busy during peak season

Best for

Remote workers, couples and visitors seeking sunshine and relaxation.

Can you stay in more than one place?

Absolutely.

In fact, many repeat visitors choose to split their stay between two parts of the island.

A common combination is:

  • Funchal + Seixal
  • Funchal + Porto Moniz
  • South coast + north coast

This allows you to experience both the convenience of the south and the quieter, more dramatic landscapes of the north.

If you’re staying for a week or longer, it’s definitely worth considering.

So where should you stay?

If it’s your first trip to Madeira, Funchal is usually the safest choice.

If you love nature, Porto Moniz and Seixal offer a more authentic experience.

If hiking is your priority, Santana is hard to beat.

If sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere matter most, consider Ponta do Sol.

The good news?

There are no bad choices.

Madeira is an island best explored rather than experienced from a single location.

No matter where you stay, I strongly recommend spending time exploring different regions of the island. Each area has its own personality, landscapes and traditions.

That’s one of the things that makes Madeira so special.

My personal recommendation

Many visitors spend too much time worrying about choosing the perfect base.

The reality is that Madeira’s greatest highlights are spread across the entire island.

Whether you’re staying in Funchal, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Santana or Ponta do Sol, the best way to truly understand Madeira is to get out and explore.

Some of my favourite memories on the island have come from small villages, hidden viewpoints, local farms and conversations with residents that most visitors never encounter.

Because in the end, where you stay matters.

But what you experience matters far more.
